Sidekick LX Finally Gets Video

That’s right the T-Mobile Sidekick LX will receive the long awaited Video OTA (over the air update) very soon. What does this mean? Well for starters you can now record and playback video on your device. The unofficial word which tends to be more of a rumor is it will be encoded in the H.264 codec which means there may be a way to interface with a youtube application. Regardless sidekick users will finally have video, and it couldn’t come any sooner.

We also have word that the Sonic Boom player will transform into an audio and video player. Apparently you will now be able to watch movies right from your memory card, finally. Who knows what hacks will open up now. In any event I am tired of covering Sidekick news lol, so after this don’t hold your breath. As a side note the special edition Sidekick will be a “Tony Hawk Edition” which sucks balls so who cares. The Gekko will replease the now defunct ID and be a special device with it’s own line of accessories. There is your fill.

Sidekick “Gekko” & “Aspen”

Take this for what its worth but the people over at TmoNews are reporting that two new versions of the Sidekick will launch in the month of July. I tend to agree with the critics who say these will either be the 3G versions of the Sidekicks and or the Limited Edition runs of the LX and the Slide.

Hiptop 3 reported:

This is definitely one to take with a grain of salt, and there’s not really a whole lot of meat to salt! Tmonews is reporting that there are is a new device (possibly two) on the way in July. They say there’s evidence (but not what the evidence is) of a device named “SK Gekko” due on July 27th and a “Sidekick Aspen” launching on July 30th. Like everyone, we’ll have our eye on the FCC site to see what sort of info we can find on these devices if they are in fact real. Could this be the 3G Sidekick we’re all waiting for or maybe just limited edition devices? We’re putting our money on some new limited edition devices since the LX hasn’t had any Limited Editions yet and it would be silly not to offer those since they sell like crazy.

We are sure that Danger/T-mobile will be releasing a new version of the Sidekick Slide which will sport a new red colorway. Pictures of the new device leaked to the internet about a week ago. Personally I would love to see a combination of both rumors and grab a Sidekick with 3g and have it be a limited edition release. I hope they can do better than Mr. Cartoon and Juicy Couture. Only time will tell.

Why I hate the Sidekick LX

CIMG1621Anyone who knows me knows that I love the Sidekick. I have been a user since the SK2 and now am a proud owner of the Sidekick LX. These phones have always been excellent and very friendly but I think I have had enough of the hype. Let me explain why.

The Sidekick 2 was revolutionary. AIM, Email, Text Msgs, and a great camera all wrapped up in one great phone with a full QWERTY keyboard. At the time the phone was acceptable because it was the first of its kind (yes I know and have played with the earlier Sidekicks). When the Sidekick 3 came along and sported an updated design people were positive that it would out shine the SK2 with an array of new and amazing features. Think again.

The Sidekick 3 was the most disappointing phone to date. The next gen phone still lacked key features that phones since the late 90’s have always had. Things like Video, True MMS picture messaging, Maps and navigation, and a decent screen were all missing. I bought my Sidekick 3 the day it came out and was stuck with a $400 phone that in truth was no better or any different then its predecessor the Sidekick 2. So I marched on and dealt with the lack luster phone hoping and praying, more importantly knowing that the next Sidekick to be released will pull through and impress me and everyone who calls the Sidekick their device of choice. I just knew that the next gen LX would sport a great camera that captured video! I knew that the LX would have a navigation program! I knew that the phone wouldn’t be so locked off so much so that I am forced to buy ringers from T-Mobile @ $3.00 a pop. Most importantly I knew Danger would impress me by releasing great new features that I had not even thought about! Think again.

In all fairness the LX is the best attempt to date for Danger to make a real name for itself as a true smart phone that has the essentials to compare to phones like the iPhone, N95, and Helio Ocean. It has a great screen and picture messaging but can there really be any acceptable excuse as to why there is still no video? Still no maps program? Still no alarm clock? (I know you can buy one but why should we have to buy something that is a basic feature on every phone!) Still poor call quality? And still no wifi? What must users do to have Danger listen to us? I really like my SKLX but I am also extremely disappointed. I hope the next attempt or next OTA shows the true followers of the brand that it was worth sticking around so long. At this point a Helio Ocean sounds kind of delicious.
