The Dark Knight Returns, not really

Alright well we knew that this would begin as soon as it could but here is an excellent example of some great artwork and photoshop skill. An obvious fan of the new Batman series has gone ahead and created a teaser coming soon poster for the next (unconfirmed) installment of The Dark Knight.

I guess we can assume that everyone is banking on The Riddler being the villain for the next movie. Rumors are and have been floating around that Johnny Depp is in line to play the role. I think that might work out well considering Depp can do well in those deep character roles. I for one am hoping they bring The Joker back. I do believe no one will play him as well as Heath but at the same time I feel the character deserves another run. He is and always will be Batman’s arch nemesis.

In any event I look forward to seeing more and more fan based artwork and photoshops. I think this first one which is really making its rounds on the net can and will be mistaken for and official release poster. Imagine how sick the real one will be!

The Dark Knight; Review [Spoilers]

img005551I went into The Dark Knight expecting to see the finest adaptation of a comic book story ever created. When I left I realized I had in fact seen more. The Dark Knight lives up to every ounce of hype and more. It steps beyond a “comic book movie” and becomes and epic story of good v. evil and the truth that one cannot live without the other. The trouble with comic book movies is seldom do they truly adhere to the story presented in trade (comic talk for graphic novels). The Dark Knight does a fantastic job of keeping with story. Yes, there are a few deviations however the general mood and vibe from the film is spot on.

Batman is a dark story. It is not Adam West running around in spandex, foiling the plans of comic relief and bad actors. Batman is a tormented and dark individual who seeks to redeem himself after witnessing the death of his parents. In The Dark Knight he meets the Yin to his Yang, The Joker. The Joker’s on screen presence is nothing short of phenomenal. Heath Ledger finds a way to take a villain so sinister and so raw few thought the character could ever leave the pages of the comics books and be properly portrayed on film. He does this and more. The Joker is finally nothing to laugh and jeer about. He is a madman with no motive. No history and no goal. He is a man who just wants to watch the world burn. Unfortunately for us Heath passed away. I fear there will not be a man capable of capturing the Joker in such a way again. No matter because his acting and presence in this film deems him the greatest Joker of all time in my book. Perhaps the greatest movie villain ever? He sure is up there.

I have spent years reading the Batman comics along with my brother and old friend Greg Lifhits. We all knew it would take something out of this world to bring The Joker to life and that something happened… was it by chance? We won’t know until part three. None the less I reccomend anyone who is a fan of the trade or a Batman fan in general to go see this movie now! There is nothing I can say to make it any greater. The movie scores a 10/10 for me and that is rare. Yes Batman’s acting is a little over the top with that “deep” voice he does but I am willing to overlook that. Finally Batman is the villain, writers and comic fans rejoice! It follows the story line!

The Batman breaks his only rule in killing Harvey Dent. This is the beginning of his emotional and mental demise both in public and in private. The Joker wins no matter what because as long as Batman remains Batman The Joker will never go away, thus always getting the best of Batman. It’s all part of the plan. As I said without one there could never be the other and the movie does it’s job to get this across. In the books every time Batman had a chance to kill Joker he doesn’t, and so too in this movie. He could have hit him with the bike, but he didn’t. Joker knows this and he has his fun. Even though Joker knows Bruce Wayne is Batman he will never leak the secret. He never wants the secret out because if the world knows… then there is no one to chase him, thus no reason to play the game. Proof of this is found when he tries to kill the one man who does know (that he knows of) the lawyer kid from Wayne Enterprises.

Harvey Dent/Two Face is another acting marvel. Sorry Tommy Lee Jones… you were absolutely horrible in that trash from the 90’s. The portrayal of Dent and Two Face is spot on as well. He sticks to character and does a great job at playing two people. Most people confuse themselves and think Two Face has a split personality. He does not. Two Face is one person fighting against himself. They did an excellent job of keeping the viewer away from making that mistake.

So that’s it. I know everyone is the biggest Batman and Joker mark now but that’s ok. The point is that the story finally gets the attention is deserves. Joker was flawless and Heath will go down as the man who made the movie and the franchise huge again. I still can’t get over the pencil trick! Pure madness! There are no more words I can spit to describe The Joker. He was flawless. Go see the movie… and let’s put a smile on that face!

Of Vital Importance: The Joker

joker-medAlright, I just want to clear the air here. This Friday the newest addition to the Batman series drops on us. The Dark Knight is the most anticipated movie of the year and by all accounts it seems like it is going to be the movie of the year. We all know that Heath died and his portrayal of the infamous Joker will become nothing short of legendary. However before the ultra-hype begins I wanted to make a few things clear here.

I am and have always been a huge fan of the Batman series. No I don’t mean the movies and that’s it. I have collected Batman comics and trade paperback books for the better part of my life. When I don’t buy them it’s because I read them in Barnes & Noble’s or Borders and I don’t need to spend. I know Saturday morning everyone and their uncle will claim to be the biggest Batman “mark”, “fanboy”, and “know it all” that has ever existed so I had to make sure I didn’t end up in this unfortunate category. Outside myself, my old friend Greg Lifhits, and my brother Randy, I don’t know anyone who has ever even talked to me about comic books, let alone the Batman series of books. Maybe my ex-girlfriend?

The Joker has been and still is one of my favorite villains ever. I don’t feel Jack did the Joker justice in the Michael Keaton Batman of 1989. I think he was too “clownish” and silly. The Joker is a killer, he is a madman and it is a relief that someone finally picked up a copy of a recent Batman novel and checked out The Joker. I believe Christopher Nolan (director of the new movie) used Batman: The Long Halloween as a reference. The Joker is not about laughing and prancing around like an asshole. The Joker is a sick, twisted, deranged, murderer. He goes as far as killing Robin (one of them anyway) in the comic books. Due to the fact he is sick and has no true motive for his destruction he is a wild card. Never once is he named properly. That’s right, we don’t know his real name. It’s not Jack Napier as the 1989 movie would lead you to believe. His only known alias is “Joe Kerr” or J. Kerr”. I am thrilled the new movie doesn’t make him out to be some “funny guy”. The Joker is in fact very serious. A sick sick individual with no regard for human life. “Some men just want to see the world burn.”

Anyway, I like most of you will be at the theater Friday, maybe Saturday and I will be viewing what I have already accepted to be the greatest comic book movie ever. Come Saturday when everyone is talking about how “they always loved The Joker and Batman” atleast you will know, and atleast I will know… I’m no fanboy.

A lot of cool stuff going on over there and I promise once I handle printing the new book I will get right back to updating Slackerstyle.

I also added a new little feature for everyone to not take part in. At the bottom of every post you will see 5 stars. You can now rate my posts. 1 for crap and 5 for amazing. You don’t have to be registered or anything and everything runs off AJAX. Just click what you feel and let’s see what happens!

6 minutes of Batman: The Dark Knight

dk09.jpgI am not late on this as I have watched it 10 times, however it has come to my attention that a lot of people have not seen this leaked footage that has been all over the Internet since “I Am Legend” hit theaters a few months ago. The footage shows what will be the opening 6 minutes to the new and highly anticipated movie Batman: The Dark Knight.

In the clip we see what appears to be the Joker and his crew robbing a bank. Just from this short amount of film I know the movie is going to be amazing. The acting is fantastic and it seems like they really nailed it with the Joker. Heath does an excellent job of being a crazed psychopath. All love and respect to Jack as the first movie Joker but I think Heath is going to out do him here.

Anyway, if you haven’t had a chance to check this out then please get in there and watch it! You can follow this link.
