IWBTG - Today’s EPIC Time Waster

IWBTG or I wanna be the guy is an EPIC and very frustrating puzzle/side scroller. You are The Kid and you have to make your way through levels of pure madness. Prepare to spend an hour just on the first level. You get one life per run and you die a horrible death if you get owned.

Everything as you perceive it to be is probably wrong. If you think you can jump onto that platform, guess what, once you do… you will probably die. You think you are safe in that corner? WHAM! You just got crushed by giant spikes. And so on, and so on.

People email me saying I don’t post enough Time Wasters… well to all of you who complain, enjoy. I’ll see you in like 3 months because this game is the most addicting time consuming thing I have ever posted. It is built fabulously and really pays homage to the 80’s/90’s side scroller.

I Wanna Be The Guy: The Movie: The Game is a sardonic loveletter to the halcyon days of early American videogaming, packaged as a nail-rippingly difficult platform adventure. Players fill the role of The Kid, a youthful, vaguely Megaman-esque protagonist on a quest to become The Guy. This inscrutable plot, however, is just a vehicle for a wide variety of inventive, well-designed and frustrating jump-and-shoot challenges that pay homage to many of the games you loved as a child. The ever-fragile Kid explodes in a shower of red pixels at the slightest brush from the game’s many obstacles, from traditional spikes and bottomless pits to more unconventional killers, such as plantlife and puzzle pieces.

Using a multi route layout not unlike a Metroidvania, the game grants a degree of deadly exploration, without those extraneous upgrades meant to make life easier. The game provides players with a choice in terms of their death rate, thanks to a variable difficulty setting that changes the number of save points from frequent to nonexistent. IWBTG is open to all players; knowledge of video gaming history is optional, and may not help against the frequently ironic and always sadistic deathtraps located herein. And so, the question is left up to you…

Posterous

I signed up for a new service today called Posterous. What is Posterous well it’s a mobile blogging platform. Posterous operates mainly through email. I have it setup to work with my Sidekick email. You pretty much just post. You can write whatever you want and attach a variety of files. From pictures to audio, word docs to pdf’s. There is no support for movies (yet?) but it does convert youtube links into youtube players.

I think the service is great and have been playing with it all day. You can check it out @ http://jayfarmington.posterous.com and maybe get coaxed to sign up. The truth is this is another web service that I will use for a week, maybe less and then forget about. Yes it does offer the ability to update Flickr and Twitter but I can do that from my cell phone without Posterous. It’s not that the service isn’t great, it is. The design of the website is flawless but do I need another social media/social network to talk about what I’m doing?

I guess Posterous falls in between Slackerstyle and Twitter. Everyone knows to follow my Twitter as I update regularly but at the same time what if I want to write more? What if I want to talk about me? Even then do I need a “side blog” to talk about me? I own this website… I can talk about myself all I want.

Anyway, give it a chance check out http://www.posterous.com and see if you fit in. If not, well I’ll understand.

On August 30th I will be down at the Grand Band Slam in Bridgeport, Connecticut supporting Bridgeport Republic Clothing. I will be Twittering through out the day and updating the Bridgeport Republic website with news and photos.

The Dark Knight Returns, not really

Alright well we knew that this would begin as soon as it could but here is an excellent example of some great artwork and photoshop skill. An obvious fan of the new Batman series has gone ahead and created a teaser coming soon poster for the next (unconfirmed) installment of The Dark Knight.

I guess we can assume that everyone is banking on The Riddler being the villain for the next movie. Rumors are and have been floating around that Johnny Depp is in line to play the role. I think that might work out well considering Depp can do well in those deep character roles. I for one am hoping they bring The Joker back. I do believe no one will play him as well as Heath but at the same time I feel the character deserves another run. He is and always will be Batman’s arch nemesis.

In any event I look forward to seeing more and more fan based artwork and photoshops. I think this first one which is really making its rounds on the net can and will be mistaken for and official release poster. Imagine how sick the real one will be!

Digsby, a new level to IM?

Digsby is a new Instant Message client that is taking the Internet by storm. What makes it so amazing? Well it’s quite next level. Not only does Digsby connect to every major message service (AIM, MSN, Yahoo, Google, Etc) but it incorporates your email (GMail, Yahoo, AOL, MSN, IMAP, and POP) flawlessly. If that wasn’t enough Digsby goes one step ahead and seemlessly integrates with MySpace, Facebook (and Facebook IM) and Twitter. That’s right it doubles as a social networking tool that alerts you of events like new messages and gives you a live Newsfeed of what your friends are up to.

Digsby feels very AIM-ish. Typical buddy list and Instant Message window. However unlike AIM it is very customizable. You can change almost everything in the program. Look and feel all with a few clicks. It is very easy to make your own and even easier to get know. While there are some parts of the prgram that annoy me a little I think this is a great step in the right direction for IM clients. Sweet little features like returning a message right from a pop up notification shows there are developers who are thinking.

Digsby is free and available now. You are required to sign up for a Digsby account but there is no harm in that. I recommend everyone give it a whirl and see how they like it. The worst that can happen is you uninstall it if you hate it.

Update: To the gentleman who emailed me… I DO use Digsby. Just because I don’t say that doesn’t mean I don’t support it or hate it! Thank you for the chuckle.
